Controlling IBR outbreaks within your herd - Agriland

Image
Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis  (IBR) is a highly infectious viral disease in cattle caused by bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1). According to Animal Health Ireland (AHI), evidence suggests that 75% of Irish cattle herds have been exposed to the virus. The virus it typically spread by close contact with an infected animal, although airborne spread is also possible at a distance of up to 5m. IBR can also be spread by contaminated semen, equipment and people. Symptoms Symptoms of possible IBR outbreak include: Dullness and reduced appetite; High temperature; rapid and loud breathing – sometimes with coughing; Fluid discharge from nose and eyes; Inflammation of the throat; On occasion, death. An outbreak of the disease will also have an impact on herd production, with reduced milk yields and abortion possible. It is also possible to have a sub-clinical infection within the herd, with the first signs of an issue being reduced yields and poor reproductive outcomes. IB...

HIV Viral load at Diagnosis Predicts Time to Rebound After Treatment Interruption - Infectious Disease Advisor

Image
Higher HIV viral load prior to antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation is associated with a shorter time to viral rebound after analytic treatment interruption (ATI), according to study findings published in Med . Data for this study were sourced from the RV254 trial, which was conducted in Thailand among patients with HIV infection who were observed for 2 to 15 years after ART initiation. In this study, researchers sought to identify biomarkers that may predict time to HIV viral rebound following ATI among patients (N=67) who were virologically suppressed via ART for a median of 3.1 years. Among patients included in the study, 27 received no intervention, 9 received vorinostat/hydroxychloroquine/maraviroc (VHM), 18 received a therapeutic HIV Ad26/MVA mosaic vaccine regimen, and 13 received broadly neutralizing human monoclonal antibody treatment with VRC01. Of all patients, 95.5% were Thai, 97% were men, 94% were men who have sex with men (94%), 73.2% were infec...

Kinetics of tick infection by the relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia hermsii acquired through artificial membrane feeding chambers | Scientific Reports - Nature.com

Image
Abstract The relapsing fever agent Borrelia hermsii is transmitted by the tick Ornithodoros hermsi . To study the B. hermsii -tick interactions required for pathogen acquisition and transmission we developed an artificial membrane feeding system for O. hermsi nymphs and adults that results in a high percentage of engorgement. This system provides the nutritional requirements necessary for the tick to develop, mate, and produce viable eggs. By inoculating the blood with B. hermsii , we were able to obtain infected ticks for quantitative studies on pathogen acquisition and persistence. These ticks subsequently transmitted the spirochetes to mice, validating this system for both acquisition and transmission studies. Using this feeding method, a mutant of the antigenic variation locus of B. hermsii (Vmp – ) that is incapable of persisting in mice was acquired by ticks at equivalent densities as the wild-type. Furthermore, Vmp is not required for persistence in the tick, as the mutant an...
