Seladelpar Safe, Potentially Effective for Cirrhosis in Primary Biliary Cholangitis - Monthly Prescribing Reference

Image
Seladelpar was safe, well tolerated, and potentially effective for the treatment of compensated liver cirrhosis among patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), according to study results presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW), held from May 21 to 24, 2022, in San Diego, California, and virtually. Patients with compensated cirrhosis associated with PBC are at risk for progression to decompensation, need for transplantation, and death. Risk for disease progression is particularly high for patients who are intolerant to or have incomplete response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). Seladelpar is a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) delta agonist that has potent anti-cholestatic and anti-pruritic activity and could be a treatment alternative for patients with unmet treatment needs. The current analysis evaluated safety and efficacy of seladelpar using pooled data from an open-label phase 2 study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT0295...

Long before the coronavirus pandemic, Kathleen Muldoon knew what it felt like to have her life changed by a virus. In 2013, Muldoon, now an associate professor at Midwestern University's medical school in Glendale, was teaching embryology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She was also pregnant with her second child. It was a fact that she shared openly with her medical students. She was set to have the baby around the end of the semester, and as she taught them each stage of development, she could give them real-life examples from her own pregnancy. But at 20 weeks, Muldoon's doctors saw something on the ultrasound. It might not mean anything was wrong, they said, but they wanted to screen her for TORCH infections, a set of congenital infections that can be transmitted during a pregnancy, delivery or after birth. Often, those infections are mild or don't cause any symptoms at all. But in some cases, they can cause the baby to experience birth defects and in som...
