It can appear suddenly or develop over several days. A number of different conditions can cause rashes, including allergies and infections; your age and genes may also play a role. A rash on your face is not only uncomfortable but also embarrassing. This article will discuss the causes of a face rash, symptoms, and treatments you can do at home. Prostock-Studio / Getty Images Causes Many factors can trigger a facial rash. Here's a look at some of the most common causes. Infectious Causes Bacteria, viruses, and fungi can all cause skin infections. Oftentimes, these pathogens enter the skin through a cut, insect bite, or other wound. Poop has its uses too. Faecal transplants are the new treatment for cancer, liver disease - ThePrint

Bengaluru:  About three and a half years ago, Joseph,   suffering from severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (SAH) as well as lung tuberculosis, was lying in a "semi-coma" at Rajagiri Hospital in Aluva, Kerala. The 65-year-old's liver was deteriorating rapidly. Over the course of his hospitalisation, he attended his daughter's engagement ceremony chaperoned by medical attendants. However, he worried that he would not live to see her wedding. He couldn't get the recommended treatment of steroids for his liver due to his TB. He was told that a liver transplant was the only procedure that could save him, but since he was also suffering from SAH, to prevent the risk of a relapse, he needed to go through a mandated sobriety period of six months before surgery. But Joseph did not have the luxury of time. That is when he was offered an unusual option — 'Faecal Microbiota Transplantation', or stool transplant. It is what it sounds l...

Tiny Fruit Fly Holds Major Genetic Transfer Discovery - UMB News

Image
A fruit fly genome is not just made up of fruit fly DNA — at least for one fruit fly species. New research from the University of Maryland School of Medicine's (UMSOM) Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) shows that one fruit fly species contains whole genomes of a kind of bacteria, making this finding the largest bacteria-to-animal transfer of genetic material ever discovered. The new research also sheds light on how this happens. Julie Dunning Hotopp The IGS researchers, led by Julie Dunning Hotopp, PhD , professor of microbiology and immunology at UMSOM and IGS, used new genetic long-read sequencing technology to show how genes from the bacteria Wolbachia incorporated themselves into the fly genome up to 8,000 years ago. The researchers say their findings show that unlike Darwin's finches or Mendel's peas, genetic variation isn't always small, incremental, and predictable. Scientist Barbara McClintock first identified "ju...

Algorithm may aid appropriate antibiotic prescribing for kids with diarrhea A randomized trial of children with diarrhea in two low-income countries found that use of an algorithm to predict the likelihood of viral etiology resulted in reduced antibiotic use in children who had a higher likelihood of viral illness, researchers reported today in JAMA Pediatrics. To determine whether the diarrheal etiology prediction (DEP) algorithm improves prescribing in children with acute diarrhea, an international team of researchers conducted a randomized crossover study at 7 government hospitals in Bangladesh (3 sites) and Mali (4 sites). Physicians enrolled in the study were randomized into an intervention arm in which the DEP, which calculates the probability of viral etiology of diarrhea based on patient-specific and location-specific features, was incorporated into smartphone-based electronic clinical decision support tool (eCDS with the DEP), and a control arm (eCDS without DEP) for 4 weeks, ...

Opinion | If You’re Suffering After Being Sick With Covid, It’s Not Just in Your Head - The New York Times

When the influenza pandemic of 1918-19 ended, misery continued. Many who survived became enervated and depressed. They developed tremors and nervous complications. Similar waves of illness had followed the 1889 pandemic, with one report noting thousands "in debt and unable to work" and another describing people left "pale, listless and full of fears." The scientists Oliver Sacks and Joel Vilensky warned in 2005 that a future pandemic could bring waves of illness in its aftermath, noting "a recurring association, since the time of Hippocrates, between influenza epidemics and encephalitis-like diseases" in their wakes. Then came the Covid-19 pandemic, the worst viral outbreak in a century, and when sufferers complained of serious symptoms that came after they had recovered from their initial illness, they were often told it was all in their heads or unrelated to their earlier infections. It wasn't until the end of the first year of the pandemic that Cong...
