The Election Conspiracy Theories Driving Tina Peters to Run in Colorado - The New York Times

Image
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Just six weeks before the 2020 presidential election — game day for vote-counting bureaucrats — Tina Peters was so proud of her operation at the Mesa County clerk's office that she invited a film crew in to show it off. There's no chance of mishap here, she boasted. "The Russians can't hack into and start casting votes for someone," she said, as a few in the office chuckled. By May 2021, it was Ms. Peters, not the Russians, who had helped engineer an audacious breach of voting machines, according to an indictment charging her with seven felonies. Ms. Peters arranged to copy sensitive election software from county voting machines in an attempt to prove the 2020 presidential election was rigged, according to court records. Prosecutors said she committed identity theft and criminal impersonation, and violated the duties of her office in the process. Ms. Peters has pleaded not guilty. The strange tale of Tina Peters — a once-ordinary public ser...

Medicaid - COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Ending Resources - Michigan State Medical Society

Image
When the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic began, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) declared a public health emergency (PHE).  During the PHE, many changes were made to the Medicaid program, including eligibility, administration, and policies. Although we are anticipating another 90-day renewal of the PHE, MDHHS has begun planning for its end. They have created a website to keep Medicaid beneficiaries, providers and community partners informed.  Medicaid Eligibility Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), states that maintained continuous Medicaid enrollment through the last day of the month in which the PHE ends, qualified for a temporary 6.2 percentage point Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) increase. Once the PHE ends, states will have up to 12 months to return to normal eligibility and enrollment operations. The Secretary of HHS has indicated that it would provide 60 days' notice prior to ter...

The contribution of hospital-acquired infections to the COVID-19 epidemic in England in the first half of 2020 - BMC Infectious Diseases - BMC Infectious Diseases

Image
We estimated that before 31st July 2020 20.1% (19.2%, 20.7%) of identified COVID-19 cases in hospitals were likely to have been hospital-acquired infections and that within-hospital transmission likely contributed directly to 26,600 (mean, 95% range over 200 simulations: 25,900, 27,700) symptomatic infections, and a further 47,400 (45,000, 50,000) hospital-linked infections. These results are based on a 7 day cut-off for symptom onset from admission and prior to discharge for defining an identified hospital-acquired case. Despite these levels of infection, we estimated hospital transmission to patients caused fewer than 1% of all infections in England in the first wave (prior to 31st July 2020). To some extent this reflects effective infection prevention within hospital settings with over 4 million non-COVID-19 patients being cared for in hospital settings during this period. However, the high proportion of hospital cases that were due to hospital-acquired inf...

Where Can Young Children Get Vaccinated for Covid-19? - The New York Times

Image
U.S. children as young as 6 months are now eligible for coronavirus vaccines, and many parents are breathing a sigh of relief. But the pharmacy that offered easy access to immunization to you or an older child might not accommodate the under-5 group. That is not necessarily a surprise. Many pharmacies do not normally give shots to very young children. But parents should know that age requirements may vary among chains. Under the federal Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act, pharmacists can give Covid vaccines to all children ages 3 and older during the public health emergency. This effectively gets around the patchwork of widely varying state-level laws around vaccination against diseases, some of which limit pharmacists to administering vaccines to adults and others that set minimum ages that can range from 3 to 17. While the majority of big pharmacy chains are giving Covid vaccines starting at age 3, some are not. Publix and Kroger, for example, are offering shots s...
