Opinion: UConn Health's mission is public service for our state - The Connecticut Mirror

Image
As the newly appointed interim CEO for UConn Health, I testified on February 22 before the Connecticut General Assembly's Appropriations Committee regarding our budget request for the next fiscal year. I highlighted the enormous good that UConn Health does and proudly carries out as a public service mission for our state. However, I remain troubled and perplexed by the level of misunderstanding and mistaken assumptions that continue to be perpetuated regarding UConn Health, our mission, and our finances. Bruce Liang MD (Tina Encarnacion/UConn Health photo) Here are some facts: For nearly every state agency, the state covers 100% of the cost of employee fringe benefits, including the so-called "legacy" costs, which are the result of the state playing catch-up to fund historical pension and health costs that for years went unfunded. But, unlike other agencies, the state does not fund these costs for UConn Health. Instead, we have had to fund them ourselves...

Streptococcus constellatus Left Ventricular Apical Mural Infective Endocarditis With Acute Stroke, Septic and Cardiogenic Shock - Cureus

Image
Infective endocarditis (IE) poses diagnostic and management difficulties. About 10,000 to 20,000 new cases occur per year in the United States of America [1]. IE is a critical public health and hospital issue with poor outcomes as the risk factors remain opaque [2]. Advanced diagnostic processes reveal a growing concern for an increased prevalence of diverse causative agents [2]. The most common causes of community-acquired native valve IE are Streptococci viridans species and Staphylococcus aureus species in healthcare-acquired native valve IE [3]. Among the S. viridans group, S. constellatus is an infrequent cause of IE and a part of the S. milleri group, including S. intermedius and S. anginosus [4,5]. They are commensals in the gastrointestinal and urogenital tract, and S. constellatus frequently colonizes the pharynx [4]. Compared to S. viridans other members, the S. milleri is distinguished by its aggressive clinical behavior causing invasive purulent infections in t...

Diarrhea and Weight Loss: Causes and Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
Diarrhea is a common health complaint. Even healthy adults and children may experience a few bouts of diarrhea each year. In the majority of cases, the symptoms are acute (short-term) and will clear up in a few days. Diarrhea that continues longer than three days is a reason to consult your healthcare provider as it may be a symptom of a more serious health condition, such as a gastrointestinal infection (like from a bacteria called  Clostridium difficile or C. diff. ), celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Persistent diarrhea lasting more than four days or chronic diarrhea lasting more than four weeks may lead to other complications, including dehydration and unintended weight loss. It's important to get a diagnosis so that the underlying cause of diarrhea can be addressed. This article discusses the potential causes of chronic diarrhea and how it can lead to unintended w...

Beginning in February, Idaho newborns will be screened for 4 additional illnesses and conditions - East Idaho News

Image
The following is a news release from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. IDAHO FALLS – Idaho's Newborn Screening Program has expanded the list of conditions for which it screens, lifting the total number from 47 to 51 effective Feb. 1. Idaho state law requires the Department's NBS Program to test infants born in Idaho for rare but treatable disorders using a dried blood spot specimen. Any infant born after the effective date will be screened for all 51 conditions. The NBS Program has been screening babies in Idaho since 1963. New technology allows screening for many conditions from a small amount of blood. The Program works with hospitals, birthing centers, midwives, and other healthcare providers to make sure babies born in Idaho are screened for harmful or potentially fatal conditions. "Early detection of many conditions can make a big difference for newborns," said Elke Shaw-Tulloch, administrator for the Division of Public Health, Department of Health ...

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Associated With Transient Hyperphosphatasemia - Cureus

Image
A majority of pediatric outpatient practice involves managing familiar diseases that present in familiar ways. Occasionally, a familiar disease presents uniquely, which adds a diagnostic challenge and enhances the clinical experience of the clinician. We describe an 18-month-old male who presented to the clinic with a familiar disease but with unique additional findings. The patient had a one-day history of rash, subjective fever, and several episodes of non-bloody diarrhea. The rash included petechial lesions across his abdomen, groin, back, arms, and legs, as well as vesicular lesions in the mouth and on the palms and soles. A tentative diagnosis of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) was made. However, the presence of petechiae prompted further laboratory evaluation, including a complete blood count (CBC) and comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP). The CBC was unremarkable, but the CMP revealed an abnormally high serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level of 1,353 U/L (normal range: 53-...

Amebiasis explained: Symptoms, treatment, prevention - Medical News Today

Image
Amebiasis, also known as amoebic dysentery, is a serious parasitic infection. This condition can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody stools, or it may cause no symptoms at all. The parasite that causes amebiasis only lives in humans and can spread through feces, infected food or water, or sexual contact. Between 40,000–110,000 people die globally from amebiasis every year. Practicing good oral hygiene can help prevent the spread of this infection. But if a person suspects they have amebiasis, they should contact their doctor as soon as possible. Early treatment can improve the outlook for this condition, as well as help stop it from spreading to other people. This article will explain amebiasis and its causes. It will also discuss the risk factors and duration of this condition, as well as giving information on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Amebiasis happens due to infection from the amoebas of the Entamoeba group. As a 2021 review explains, most symptomatic amebiasis ...

How to Prevent Leg Cramps and Treat Them at Home - Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

Image
Painful leg cramps aren't just annoying episodes of discomfort. Because they typically occur at night, they can wake you, interrupting necessary rest and sleep.   Advertising Policy Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. Policy Complicating matters is the fact there are such a wide variety of causes for leg cramps, from overexertion to neurological conditions to circulation disorders. And there are idiopathic causes, too, which essentially means the causes are unknown.  But just because they're widespread and have so many causes doesn't mean there aren't good prevention and treatment options. Family medicine doctor Matthew Goldman, MD, walked us through the best options and also suggested some things to avoid.  Leg cra...
